Markus Glatzel

Prof. Dr. Med. Markus Glatzel studied Medicine at the Universities of Ulm, Freiburg and Durban/South Africa. After a residency at Pathology/Neuropathology, University of Zurich, he was co-director of the Swiss National Reference Center for Prion Diseases. Since 2006, Prof. Markus Glatzel is the director of the Institute of Neuropathology in the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE). The Institute of Neuropathology is part of the Diagnostics Center and deals with the diagnosis of diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system and muscles.

In his research, he is particularly interested in the mechanisms of synaptic dysfunction in prion diseases such as Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the role that the prion protein plays in dementia. Moreover, he is also investigating the mechanisms of SARS-CoV 2 neuroinvasion, how SARS-CoV 2 leads to neurological symptoms, and the long-term consequences of COVID-19 in the CNS.
