Dr. Susanne Krasemann studied biology with a focus on virology and molecular genetics and started her scientific career at the Department of Virology and Immunology at the German Primate Center Göttingen/Germany, where she got her diploma and PhD. During this time, she worked with different virus species but also started working on in prion disease pathophysiology. Moving to University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) she quickly developed an interest in immune cell dysregulation in neurodegenerative diseases including prion and Alzheimer’s disease. To get a better understanding of brain immune cells, I joined the lab of Prof. Oleg Butovsky, Harvard Medical School, Boston/USA. Back at the UKE, due to her fascination for tissue-based research and pathology, she took over the lead of the Core Facility of Pathology and started her own research group with a focus on immune cell dysregulation. Further fueled by the COVID-19 pandemic, she initiated and collaborated on different projects on the tissue pathology of human viral diseases and their respective models including Ebola virus, Lassa virus, SARS-CoV-2, and MPXV.
